Oprah Winfrey surprises her dad Vernon with a day of appreciation amid his lingering illness

Oprah Winfrey does everything for her father!

The media mogul, 68, celebrated July 4 on Monday by throwing a special surprise party for his father, Vernon Winfrey.

In a video shared to her Instagram, Oprah said that while she was hosting a backyard barbecue, the real reason for the occasion was to host a Vernon Winfrey appreciation day.

“My dad is sick so we wanted to be able to bring all his friends over and celebrate while he can receive joy,” she said, pointing to the banner behind her honoring her 88-year-old father. .

When her best friend Gayle King asked her if her dad was “excited” about the celebration, Oprah replied, “He doesn’t even know it’s for him.”

“He thinks it’s a 4th of July thing,” she continued. “He doesn’t know…He’s going to come out and see everything.”

Scrolling through the event menu, Oprah said she served fried chicken, turkey, burgers “and all that.”

She then ended the video by showing her dad enjoying the moment in a place he knew best. “My dad is a hairdresser, so we put him in the hairdresser’s chair,” she explained, pointing to her dad sitting across the yard.

In the caption of her post, Oprah wrote, “Giving my dad his ‘flowers’ while he’s still well enough to smell them. Happy 4th of July as you reunite with family and friends. Don’t forget not to celebrate you 💐”

At this time, it is unknown what illness Vernon is battling. Oprah did not provide further details on her father’s condition.

Over the past few days, Oprah has documented her time in Nashville, Tennessee, where her father currently lives.

She shared several snaps and videos of herself spending time with her family, and also shared a video with King, 67, as they cooked breakfast together.

“Making breakfast for the family with @gayleking 🍳🥓☕️ #Nashvillestyle,” Oprah captioned the clip, which showed them making bacon, sausage and oatmeal.

In June 2021, Oprah spoke with PEOPLE about her father ahead of the OWN special titled Honor our kings, celebrate black fatherhoodin which she co-hosted with It’s us alum Sterling K. Brown.

“I had a father who took responsibility for me, even though he knew I could have been someone else’s child,” she said of Vernon.

“My mom and dad never got married,” she added. “They had sex once. After I was born, he gets a letter saying, ‘Send some money. You have a daughter.” And the reason he did it, he said, is because it could have been him. And the responsibility he took for me, not just a responsibility but care, love, direction and support as a young teenager, is what made the difference between me being who I am now or someone you would never have heard of.”

“I saw this time and time again in my father’s barber shop. Men would come, hardworking men, doing all they could in their lives to support their families, sometimes working two or three jobs to do it,” she continued. “So that’s the story I know of black fathers – the ones I grew up with and the man I know. The absent father story, it’s not true that that’s the only image. C is what I mean.”
