Multidisciplinary artist R. Luc DuBois transforms trillions of bytes of Akamai data into “Portrait of Online Life” available for auction on May 11, 2022
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Akamai Technologies, Inc.. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the cloud company that powers and protects life online, today unveiled the internet’s first dynamically crafted non-fungible token (NFT) artwork. Based on data pulled from the Akamai Intelligent Edge platform, which provides the most comprehensive reflection of global Internet activity available, the NFT will visually evolve in real time as Internet traffic changes and cyberattacks unfold. The auction for the NFT starts today via the Artano marketwith the final offers due by June 24, 2022 at 12 midnight PST.
As the world’s largest edge platform with 4,000 points of presence in nearly 900 cities, Akamai is uniquely positioned to project the entire Internet into a one-of-a-kind digital work of art.
“Akamai is passionate about powering and protecting the endless possibilities of life online. What better way to convey our pivotal role than through a dynamic Internet portrait that reflects our unique vision of Internet business fueled by billions of people living their lives online,” said Kim Salem Jackson, Chief Marketing Officer, Akamai. “With this NFT, we hope to show a new audience just how beautifully complex the internet is and how Akamai is helping to create a safer, more connected world.
Renowned multidisciplinary artist R. Luc DuBois, which is adept at translating the intersection of art, culture, and technology, was selected by Akamai to interpret its vast dataset. DuBois approached the NFT as a work of art that can be both seen and heard. By taking inspiration from Akamai’s data stream and incorporating both healthy network activity, such as traffic generated by people viewing news feeds and streaming videos, and adversarial network activity, such as server denial of service attacks, phishing emails and website corruption, the illustration reflects humanity’s multifaceted online footprint.
“Interpreting what the Internet means to the world – the good and the bad, its enormous scale and its infinite potential – was a challenge that immediately inspired me,” said DuBois. “Working with such a uniquely rich dataset and layering advanced AI technology, I shaped the artwork to capture the fluid nature of the internet and the humanity behind it. .”
The NFT is available exclusively on the artist-friendly Artano marketplace, which is run on the Cardano blockchain. Akamai selected Cardano, an environmentally sustainable blockchain, which uses a proof-of-stake system, where the capital cost comes from stakeholders holding tokens in the system, not hardware and electricity. Artwork will reflect internet data from Akamai’s global platform for one year, after which it will continue to morph based on an AI prediction of what internet activity will look like over time .
In keeping with the company’s goal of improving the lives of billions of people, billions of times a day, all proceeds from the sale of this NFT will be donated to the Akamai Foundation. The foundation will dedicate the funds to initiatives that support the next generation of online living by providing equal access to quality STEM education and attracting diverse talent to the tech industry.
