How do Search Engine Web Crawlers (“Spiders”) Work?

It is quite amazing now a day the numbers of sites that goes up each day. However most of those site owners are only knowledgeable of how to build a site. Most of them do not have a sense of understanding, on how search engines actually work and do not know about web crawlers.

All in all, we all know that ranking high on search engines is the major source in bringing prospective customers and viewers to your site. So why not learn a little more about how search engines work.

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, utilizes what they call “spiders or crawlers” to index websites into their search database. When a site owner performs a directory submission of their site, the search engine spider is the one responsible in indexing your website. The “spider” is an automatic program generated by the search engine companies. This spider algorithm visits a website, crawls and remembers all the contents of the site, including the site’s Meta tags, and follows the links that the website connects to. Once this task is completed, the Spider returns all valuable data to its database and enters it in to the search engine system to be included in the listing. Keep in mind that spiders will only index a certain number of links from your site, so please keep it average and not include 300 pages or so.

Think of the spider as an inspector, it will always come back to your site to inspect any changes that has been done over a period of the time. This period of time depends on when the site moderator informs the spider on when changes usually occur, it can be everyday, every week, every month, etc.

Email Marketing: A Simple, Free and Overlooked Way to Market Your Business

Email. We use it for everything from chatting with our friends and family to corresponding with clients and sending business inquiries to helping others in online discussion forums. It’s arguably become *the* mode of modern-day communication – more so than the telephone, certainly more so than letter writing.

There’s a limited amount of real estate in every email that you send. How you use it determines, in part, how effective your emails are and how well you are marketing yourself. Given how often emails are forwarded around, a well-crafted email signature can get you calls/emails from prospects you never knew even existed, new ezine subscribers and, in the best cases, a new client – this is a great return on free marketing.

1. Keep it *plain*.

Better use of META TAGS on websites

Meta Tags are what all search engines look at in one form or another to list your web site in a search engine directory. Located in the head of your web page code, your visitors don’t see them but without them your web site won’t get very many visitors. In order for each of your web pages on your web site to be properly categorized by search engine spiders they must contain three very important meta tags.

- Title Tag : This is the single most important tag. It is what search engines will use as the link to your web site within their directory. The title tag needs to contain as many keywords that apply to your page as possible, be no longer than 60 characters long (includes spaces) and be readable so that it will get people to click on it. Without a good title tag your web page stands little chance of coming up high in keyword searches done on search giants like Google.

- Description Tag : This is what you hope the search engine will use for the brief description that is placed after your linked title in the search directory. It should also contain as many keywords that are important to the web page, be no longer than 150 characters (includes spaces) and be a legible sentence. It should reinforce the title making readers want to click on your listing but do not duplicate your title word for word in your description. Some search directories use your web page content in place of this description so be sure your first few sentences of content reflect the purpose of the page and the page title.
